It’s the time of year where everyone in the fashion world will eschew their own tips and tricks for effortless transition weather dressing. I’ve found quite a few of those tips and tricks to be helpful. The issue I always have with this time of year is that there’s a new trend or a new style that claims to be ‘perfect’ for transition dressing. Leave it to any fashion brand to push new items for sale whenever there’s the slightest change of weather. How else would we have fashion billionaires? I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t feel pressured to buy anything new to navigate the tumultuous weather patterns of September and October. In fact, you probably have everything in your wardrobe already.

The (not so) funny bit about transition weather dressing is the key to doing it right is already in the name. As the weather transitions from balmy to brisk, we have the chance to play around with anything we’d throw on under our big winter coats. The right piece will be able to keep things breezy at the sun’s peak while fending off the evening chill. I’ve personally opted to throw on a structureless, vintage cotton blazer over a simple white tee. Denim or canvas jackets would also work perfectly here. For best results, use a simple, a-seasonal base — white tee & denim for me.

The tied knitwear was a huge styling trend on Instagram and, while I’m consistently trend adverse, this one was too easy to test out. I’ll always try something when I can use what I already have in my closet. My favorite bit of this trend is that it’s taken an otherwise preppy detail and made it effortlessly chic. The trend really called to me because, especially with the unpredictable weather, I can always have a knit with me even if I don’t end up needing it. To complement the sage of the blazer and ground a light-toned outfit, I opted for this rich, tobacco-colored cardigan. Once I threw it on, it really pulled all the other elements of this look together.

Transition weather is the perfect time of year to flex your styling muscles and creatively leverage the wardrobe you already have. Everything you need is already there. There might be a learning curve but the most unexpected combinations will probably be the ones you’ll love the most. Never forget that it’s supposed to be fun.
